Entertainers Dulce Sloan and Yvonne Orji have both stated that every Black person in the United States needs therapy. This perspective, however, is strikingly similar to the 2001 findings of the U.S. Surgeon's General Office, which determined that racism was so toxic that scholars needed “to develop strategies and interventions to buffer [its] harmful influence.”
Unfortunately, while there are many resources that highlight the negative impacts of racism on physical and psychological health, there is:
“much less certainty on how the application or practice of psychology can be leveraged to address the prevalence and the impact of racism."
That’s why I am pursuing a degree in Clinical Psychology. I want to use my education and training to theorize solutions that address the psychological distress that has plagued the African-American community for too long. But to do this, I need your help.
